Android is a Linux-based operating system  designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.Initially developed by Android, Inc.,which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005,  And in 2007 first time publicly Android was unveiled along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance like Samsung, HTC etc .

The first Android-powered phone  was HTC dream was sold in October 2008. HTC dream was a slider smartphone which powered by 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A ARM11 processor and having 256 MB of ROM and 192 MB RAM .Storage is expandable up to 16 GB .

Minimum requirement for an android phone processor is 600mhz

 Biggest positive point in this operating system which makes it's popularity multiple time double  is that it is  open source because Google releases the code under the Apache License. This open source code and permissive licensing allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers and local developers like me and you . 

Because Android is open source Android has a large community of developers writing applications  that extend the functionality of devices .Basically language used in Android is customized version of the Java programming language.Due to this in October 2012, there were approximately 700,000 apps available for Android  .
If you have a low end device you and you not able to play some high definition games you root your phone and now you able to play some games in your phone and your phone also become faster by increasing CPU fan speed .

Rooting is like jail breaking after rooting you have control on your phone and your warranty is void.

Even after rooting you also change your Rom you easily download Rom for your phone from internet which is made up by  some local and community  programmer this roms known as custum roms.custom rim  available on market is by pacman , CyanogenMod , AOKP  Paranoid Android , Liquid Smooth,MIUI ,  Jelly BAM, Avatar ROM etc . 

And you also upgrade your phone Android version after rooting because some phones cannot easily get update by company so that's why you can use  this method
